Farm-level data integration: future problems and consequences for public and private structures AgEcon
Mayer, Walter H..
One of the outcomes of the EC-FP7 project “Future Farm” was showing the need of INTEGRATION, something that PROGIS has been doing for 15 years. Within the whole sector agriculture–forestry-environment-risk management there is an enormous need for integration that is not available yet, because of on side the existing admin-sector-structures plus on the other side diverse public and/or private interests with opposite directions and in many cases the not streamlined interest of ALL involved parties. On the other hand we have the nature that is fully integrated and should be managed by us! Nothing happens without being related to something else within the nature. We have to be more aware of this and have also to understand that ICT will be the driver of...

Havlicek, Zdenek; Lohr, Vaclav; Benda, Petr.
Tourism is regarded as the world’s future. Agritourism is a unique symbiosis of agriculture and tourism. Based on extensive analysis of the state agritourism in the Czech Republic, it was found that information on agritourism facilities is very diverse and disorderly, lacking a specialized portal for agro-tourism. Agritourism facilities in the Czech Republic is several thousand, but most of them have non-quality web sites, or none at all. It should be ensured that entrepreneurs in the agritourism (farmers) had knowledge easily and with minimum cost to present their own small farm on the web, such as using Web content management system (WCMS). It is proposed the new portal solution, which according to the principles of Web 2.0 will provide greater...

ICT helps to overcome disabilities AgEcon
Benda, Petr; Havlicek, Zdenek; Lohr, Vaclav; Havranek, M..
As a result of technological progress ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) has created the so-called „digital divide“. Some people are unable to individually respond to this progress, but the proper use of ICT can help them overcome this handicap. One of the possibilities is to create accessible and usable applications depending on the character and level of disability. In accordance with the European CertiAgri project, e-learning tools are used for integrating people with disabilities into the horticultural area. The paper specifically describes examples of simple teaching aids from the practical „green care“ course, which focus on the skills of people with mental disabilities.

Spatial Agglomeration, Technology and Outsourcing of Knowledge Intensive Business Services. Empirical Insights from Italy AgEcon
Antonietti, Roberto; Cainelli, Giulio.
Aim of this paper is to explore the main drivers of outsourcing of knowledge intensive business services by Italian manufacturing firms. While anecdotal and empirical evidence has emphasized labour cost and scale economies as behind firms’ choices to outsource production or service activities, here we focus on spatial agglomeration and technology as important factors. Using microeconomic data on a repeated cross-section of Italian manufacturing firms for the period 1998-2003, we develop a two-stage model in order to avoid selection bias: first, we estimate the determinants of the firm's decision to outsource business-related services; second, we estimate the main factors underlying the intensity and complexity of KIBS outsourcing, expressed by the number...

The role of broadband developments financed from EU Structural Funds in the enhancement of regional cohesion in the NMS-10 AgEcon
Feko, Adrienn; Sass, Magdolna; Nagy, Gabor.
This paper examines if broadband Internet access (‘broadband’) developments enhance regional cohesion in ten New Member States (NMS-10) of the European Union. It focuses on broadband developments in these countries financed from Structural Funds (SF). The importance of their impacts is potential, but not automatic. The topic is well established theoretically, versus business. There is no conclusive evidence yet empirically. Broadband is perceived here as an essential part of ICT, enabling the spread and use of ICT. The paper analyses (1) the regional dimension of broadband access in the NMS-10, (2) the recognition of broadband-cohesion links by NMS-10 governments, and (3) the priority given to broadband in SF spending. The impact of broadband developments...
